How this works

The names are shuffled with a Fisher–Yates pass whose every swap is drawn from crypto.getRandomValues, discarding draws that would lean towards the top of the list — so every order of the names is equally likely, and where someone sits in your paste has no bearing on where they end up. The shuffled names are then dealt out one at a time, round the teams like cards, which is why no team is ever more than one person larger than another.

Number of teams splits everyone into that many. People per team works out how many teams that takes and then evens them out, rather than leaving a short team at the end: ten people in teams of four becomes four, three and three, not four, four and two. The page says when it had to do that, and why. Pressing the button again reshuffles from scratch; it does not nudge the last split.

It knows nothing about the people, so it cannot balance skill, keep friends apart or seat a captain in each team — a truly random split sometimes puts the three strongest together, and that is what random means. If balance matters, make the teams here and swap by hand. A name written twice is treated as two people, and the page points it out. Nothing is sent or stored; the Dark button keeps its own setting in this browser's local storage. Up to 5,000 names.
